Founder Jeff Schacher started a software company called WhenToManage, a restaurant managing system, that allowed people managing restaurants to easily track labor and inventory. Schacher’s company was successful, but wanted to put his company’s skills toward a social cause.
With funding from foodrunners.org, Food Rescue US, (formerly Community Plates) was born. Food Rescue US is self-described as “tech powered food rescue”. This technology simplifies the connection by “bridging the gap between excess and access” .
It works by connecting food donors, receiving agencies, and volunteer food rescuers through their app. Food donors can register on the Food Rescue App on itunes or Google Play. Any restaurant or bakery, grocery stores, even farmers markets, can register on the app. Agencies can enter their needs and will be matched up with scheduled food rescues.
Volunteer food rescuers can log on and find places that have food that they want to donate. If there are deliveries that are convenient, they can sign up to recover the food and take it to a receiving agency.
TL;DR: Watch this video and get inspired.
